After our fun Designer Spotlight on Jimmy Evans last month, we decided to sit down with our 80-year-old friend and colleague again for more time travel to learn about the 1960s Charleston design world. We learned a little more about who’s who of interior design, and Jimmy also told us about his adventures back then in sourcing for his very own antique store.

Designer Spotlight on Kathryn Greeley: Queen of Collected Interior Design
Kathryn Greeley is a Waynesville, NC-based interior designer who Margaret Donaldson has known for about 25 years now. They met through the American Society for Interior Designers, an organization that formed in 1975 to provide designers with a supportive, educational, and professional community. It is the oldest professional organization for designers.
Palu: Beds, baskets, and more
Palu is a home furnishings company out of Seattle, and their pieces have popped up in our designs quite a bit of late. We admire their pristine craftsmanship and affordable prices, prices that make it possible to accommodate tight budgets but still provide beautiful products that our clients adore. I’d love to share with you some of the specific pieces we’ve used around town and hopefully introduce you to a new collection that you and your home may connect with and enjoy someday, too.
MDI does New York: How to Design a Charleston Home Using Manhattan Resources
Alexis and I took a little trip last week. Because clients of ours based in NYC are renovating their Kiawah Island home, it made more sense for us to work around their busy schedule and head north to discuss all of the design details at a time and place most convenient for them.
Designer Spotlight on Jimmy Evans, Charleston, SC
Jimmy Evans has always had an eye for design, long before Margaret Donaldson Interiors found him and began working with him years ago. At 90 years young, Jimmy is rich with stories about the old days of design, from Paris to South Carolina, and how things have changed within Charleston’s design world alone.
Hickory Chair: A favorite in furniture design
Hickory Chair is a fine furniture manufacturer based in Hickory, North Carolina—only about four hours away from our humble headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina. We at Margaret Donaldson Interiors have long been fans of the exemplary craftsmanship the furniture design company has produced over the past 100 (yes, 100!) years, and we’re proud that they’re not only in the USA but also in the South.
How to Go to Market: Our High Point adventure and interior design discoveries
Four Interior Designers Went to Market
A couple of weeks ago, my MDI colleagues and I ventured up to neighboring North Carolina to attend the High Point Market—the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world. There, we discovered countless remarkable pieces that caught our eye for one reason or another.

Reclaimed DesignWorks- Charleston, SC
What could be better than pizza, craft beer and our friends down at Reclaimed DesignWorks Charleston, SC. Last Thursday, we joined them along with Coast Crust and Coastal Craft & Cru to enjoy the restored vintage trucks that now serve up incredible Neopolitan-style pizza, craft beer, wine and more deliciousness. To top it all off, Reclaimed DesignWorks did an incredible job with the refurbishment of the food trucks. These are not your ordinary food trucks.
