The Spaces Between: Thoughtfully-Designed Transitional Spaces
April 20, 2026
When it comes to luxury interior design, no space is overlooked. Spaces that we move through are just as important as the ones we spend time in. Entryways, mudrooms, hallways, and quiet corners are often thought of as purely functional, but they work overtime in shaping how a home feels as you move through it. When designed intentionally, these spaces in between set the tone and create the flow of the home. Walk through some of our favorite intentionally-designed transitional spaces with us!
Welcoming Entryways
An entryway is the first impression of the home. From grand foyers with sweeping staircases to cozy entryways layered with warm textures, this area gives a preview for what’s to come throughout the rest of the home. Lighting plays a key role in entryway design, whether it’s natural light pouring in through thoughtfully placed windows or a statement chandelier reflecting the home’s style. In addition to architectural design and lighting, thoughtful details make all the difference here. Well-placed side tables, area rugs, and natural greenery all provide a warm welcome into any home.
Functional Mudrooms
Mudrooms are where thoughtful design really shines. Mudrooms work overtime when it comes to the functionality. They typically become the “dump” spot as family members file into the home. It’s easy for this space to become overwhelmingly cluttered as it handles the chaos of daily life, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Intentional storage is an easy solution to hiding the clutter in a stylish way. Built-ins with hidden shelving, hook displays, and accented throw pillows help these spaces work hard while still feeling clean and put together. These spaces support how a home functions, without sacrificing how it looks.
Intentional Hallways
Hallways and landings are often completely overlooked, but they offer some of the best opportunities to add character to a home. These areas keep the home connected, and when given attention they can make the home feel cohesive. Curved windows, a built-in staircase reading nook, and a walkthrough wet bar are architectural design details that make a home feel personally curated. Sometimes it’s the finer details, including color, intricate trim, and wallcoverings, that make a hallway feel like part of the design, rather than a path through it.
When given the same level of attention as the main living areas, these in-between spaces feel like a true part of the home instead of an afterthought. It’s often in these quieter spaces where thoughtful design makes the biggest impact, tying everything together. Check out our portfolio for more luxury entryways, mudrooms, and hallways!
